Revamp Your Hashtag Strategy

First things first—hashtags aren’t as important as they used to be. Popular hashtags are oversaturated, and your content can get lost in literally millions of posts—but that doesn’t mean you need to give up on hashtags altogether. You can still get value out of a good hashtag strategy.

  • Make sure your hashtags aren’t too long. The longer the hashtag, the more likely it isn’t one that people actually use or search for. So if it isn’t going to help your content get discovered… What is the point in using it?

  • Make sure your hashtags fit your niche. If you own a restaurant, #restaurant is too broad to use. #woodfiredpizza would be a better choice. Think about what you offer, and make a list of relevant keywords. Use those keywords to develop hashtags that are valuable to your strategy!

  • Make sure you check the numbers. You can easily see how many times a hashtag has been used. If it’s over one million, then the hashtag is oversaturated with content, and it probably won’t serve you! Used less than 100 times? Then it probably isn’t an often-searched hashtag, and that won’t serve you either. Find the sweet spot!

  • Make sure you vary your hashtags. Use a few that have been used in the range between 5k to 500k times. When you work between those numbers, you have the best chance of getting fresh eyes on your content!

  • Make sure your hashtags are relevant. Who cares if people are seeing your posts if the content doesn’t resonate with them!? When your hashtags match your content, you will find people that actually care about what you are posting. If the audience you reach isn’t interested in what you’re sharing, it’s a waste of time.

Follow these guidelines, and you will see your reach start to increase. Need help developing your hashtag strategy? Reach out to us!
